Spread the Word

I've always known that organ donation was important- in fact, I remember signing my first organ donor card when I got my licence at 16. I've seen the power of transplants and it just seemed like the right thing to do- one signature could save 8 lives. Every year more that 260 people die waiting for a transplant. In 2016 alone, 4500 people were waiting on organ transplant lists- last year more than 1500 of those were in Ontario. I never dreamed I'd be one of those numbers- but unfortunately. I soon will be. I currently have between 6 and 8 % kidney functionality, and while I'm trying to hold off as long as possible before undergoing dialysis- it's inevitable. I will need dialysis and I need a new kidney.

But I am lucky.

I'm lucky because I have friends and family willing to be checked to see if they are suitable donors. But they may not be- and I could end up languishing on that organ donation wait list for years. The average wait time is 4 years. My process is just beginning- but there are thousands of other Canadians who have been waiting for years, who need help today. And you can help them- you can save their lives- just by filing in a form. Nobody wants to think about dying. But if you could save even one life in your death, at no cost to you, why wouldn’t you do it? You can be a superhero- just by filling in this form. Please don’t take your organs to heaven, heaven knows we need them here. Xo Cristina
