Darryl's Story: Gift of 8 Campaign
After 5 years of fighting for his life, Darryl never dreamed that needing a kidney transplant would be announced to him so soon, a few months before his 40th Birthday. Darryl has battled type 1 diabetes since the age of 6. Besides struggling with balancing his sugars and 5 injections daily he lived an active and happy life. Married his high school sweetheart, completed 2 university degrees, bought a house, played on many sports teams and enjoyed travelling. Life changed in 2010 when Darryl suffered cardiac arrest during routine heart testing. Since then he has had: 3 heart surgeries – including a quadruple bypass open heart surgery, 180 therapy hours in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, 2 eye surgeries and implementation of an Internal Automated Defibrillator surgery.
