Steve Anderson - Caledonstock: Gift of 8 Campaign
Caledonstock is a rock and roll fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis Canada (CFC). This Woodstock-themed event, open to adults, is being held on July 20, 2013 on a farm. It was started by Steve Anderson, as a tribute to a family member, who received a transplant in 2010. Caledonstock (caledonstock.com) now includes an organ donor registration campaign. Canada, and especially Toronto, has some of the most highly-skilled surgeons, as the world's first successful lung transplant was performed here in 1983. But as advances in treatment have made lung transplants possible for more patients, more people are waiting for the organs. Some European countries assume that citizens will donate their organs. They must opt-out if they do not want to donate. Canada’s approach, using awareness programs, is to encourage people to sign up. Our results need to improve, as only 23 per cent register and in the early part of 2013, approximately 95 Ontario residents died while waiting for organs.
