Excelling in care for the critically ill and kidney transplantation, St. Michael’s Hospital and its staff are involved in both sides of organ and tissue donation.

It’s obvious why organ and tissue donation matters to the recipients, who can recover to lead healthy lives but St. Michael’s staff see the positive impact organ and tissue donation can have for donors and their loved ones too. A grieving family, supported by our staff through the decision process, can see organ donation is an opportunity to honour their loved ones’ memory and a way to give something back in the face of a tragic event.

Many Ontarians think they're registered, but aren't. St. Michael's is committed to inspiring people to check their status—to either confirm that they're already registered or to register for the first time. We're also asking them to ask their friends and family to register. This can be done online in just two minutes, right from this page.

As an organ donor, you can save up to eight lives; tissue and eye donors can improve the lives of up to 75 more. As one of Canada’s premier critical care hospitals, St. Michael’s is committed to offering the option of organ and tissue donation as part of our end-of-life care. This commitment supports the wishes of donor families and patients and also helps the thousands of Canadians who are in need of an organ, tissue or eye donation.

SOME FACTS ABOUT THE NEED FOR DONORS

• Every three days, someone dies in Ontario because the life-saving organ transplant they need is not available, yet less than 30% of Ontarians have registered their consent to be a donor.
• Many organs can be donated, including heart, intestines, kidneys, liver, lungs, and pancreas. Tissues that can be donated include corneas, heart valves, and skin. Donations may be used in people who have organ failure, who are blind, or who have severe burns or serious diseases.
• There are 1,500 people in Ontario waiting for organ transplants and the thousands more waiting for tissue transplants. At St. Michael’s alone there are approximately 400 patients on our deceased donor list and about 50 patients in various stages of evaluation for living kidney donation.
